What Is a DVLA Registered Keeper Check?
A DVLA Registered Keeper Check allows you to identify the registered keeper of a vehicle from either its registration number (VRN) or its chassis number (VIN). This service is carried out under prescribed DVLA criteria, and every enquiry must be made under one of the DVLA's reason codes, listed below.
What Information Will Be Returned?
A successful keeper check will typically return the name and address of the person or organisation registered as the vehicle keeper.
Please note: The registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner of the vehicle. The keeper is the person responsible for the vehicle's registration and taxation.
Who Can Request This?
DVLA registered keeper checks are only available for lawful purposes as prescribed by the DVLA. Every enquiry must be made under one of the following reason codes, which you select when you instruct us:
- 00DQ — Abandoned Vehicles
- 00DR — Court Judgment
- 00DS — Repossession
- 00DT — Disposal
- 00DU — Accident with Third Party Vehicle
- 00DV — Hit and Run
- 00DW — Suspected Fraud
Important: We are unable to process requests that do not meet DVLA criteria. Requests for personal curiosity, surveillance of individuals, or any purpose not covered by the prescribed reasons will be declined.
What You Need to Provide
To request a DVLA keeper check, you will need:
- Reason for enquiry — One of the reasons prescribed by the DVLA, selected from the list on our instruction form
- Registration number (VRN) or chassis number (VIN) — Either one identifies the vehicle. You do not need both
- Event date — The date of the incident or event the enquiry relates to, since the DVLA returns the keeper as at that date
You can also add your own reference number, up to 20 letters and numbers, which we carry through the enquiry and quote back to you.

- We query the DVLA directly — As an authorised KADOE account holder, we run the enquiry against DVLA records ourselves, with no third party in the chain
